Why Most Teething Products Don't Actually Work — And What We Built Instead

Most teething products don't treat the pain. They distract from it.

Frozen teething rings give your baby something cold to bite down on. The moment they drop it, the pain comes back. Teething gels contain lidocaine — it numbs the gum for a few minutes then washes away in the drool. You're reapplying every 20 minutes. Calpol and Nurofen help, but they take 45 minutes to kick in and you're limited on how often you can give them.

None of them actually address what's causing the pain.

What actually causes teething pain

When a tooth pushes through the gum, it creates inflammation, swelling, heat and tenderness in the surrounding tissue. That inflammation is what makes babies so miserable. It's not just pressure. It keeps coming back until the tooth fully breaks through, which can take days.

Most products manage the symptoms. None of them calm the inflammation directly.

Why we created Mama's Teether

I'm Hazel, the founder. I watched my baby go through teething and felt completely helpless with everything available. I wanted something that worked with the gum directly, not a distraction, not a chemical numbing agent that washed away in minutes, but something natural that actually addressed the source of the discomfort.

Every ingredient is cosmetic-grade and carefully formulated. The base of the formula is glycerin and butylene glycol, both widely used in baby skincare products globally, both considered safe at cosmetic concentrations, and both present here as gentle carriers that help the active ingredients absorb into the skin effectively.

The remaining ingredients — including Lavandula Angustifolia (lavender) extract, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) oil, Mentha Piperita (peppermint) leaf extract, and Tocopherol (vitamin E) — are all present in trace amounts of 0.02% or less. This is intentional. At these concentrations they are gentle, non-toxic, and widely used in premium baby skincare products worldwide.

Is it safe?

Every ingredient is cosmetic-grade and present in carefully measured concentrations. The formula carries a full safety assessment with zero health hazard ratings across every category.

It's applied externally to the jaw and cheek. Nothing goes in your baby's mouth. The peppermint extract, the ingredient parents most often ask about is present at 0.02% concentration. That's trace level. Not pure peppermint oil.

If your baby touches the area and puts their hand in their mouth, the trace amounts involved are safe. We'd recommend staying with them while it absorbs, which is usually when the crying and pain stops anyways.
